Couples Therapy
Do you remember the caterpillar scene in Alice In Wonderland? Alice encounters a high and mighty caterpillar, who is having trouble reciting his lines, and as he speaks smoke seeps from his mouth in the shape of letters and images. Shades of blue, yellow and pink--beautiful and a bit unsettling. When my husband began speaking to me again, the words he was saying had the same detached quality, as if they were not really anchored to a person at all, but rather free floating into space in search of somewhere to land. Every interaction we’ve had has been transactional for so long, that I now find myself struggling to accept there is a personality buried under the routine.
